Ford Recalls 694,271 Bronco Sport, Escape SUVs for Fire Risk
A cracked fuel injector could leak fuel inside the engine compartment, leading to a fire under the hood.
Ford is recalling nearly 700,000 Bronco Sport and Escape SUV models over a potential for fire.
The issue originates from fuel injectors that may crack, leading to fuel leaking in the engine compartment.
The recall population covers certain 2020–2022 Escape and 2021–2024 Bronco Sport models, all equipped with turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engines.
Following a yearlong investigation, Ford has issued another in a string of recent recalls of its products. This time it’s for 694,271 Bronco Sport and Escape models because of a fire risk. The recall population includes a subset of 2021 through 2024 Bronco Sport and 2020 through 2022 Escape SUVs and expands on previous recalls from 2022 and 2024.

Recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that the recall is the result of fuel injectors that may crack, spilling fuel into the cylinder head, which can then drain onto hot surfaces in the exhaust/turbo system. If fuel or vapor accumulates near hot engine components or ignition sources, it could create a fire under the hood, according to the filing.
All models included in the recall are equipped with Ford’s turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. The documents associated with the recall show that 0.3 percent of the recall population is estimated to have the defect.
According to an article from Reuters, Ford estimates the recall will cost the company more than $500 million. “We estimate the aggregate cost of the action, based on the remedy options we are evaluating, to be about $570 million and will be reflected in our second quarter 2025 results,” Ford said.
Affected owners will be notified by mail and instructed to bring their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have an interim remedy installed. The temporary fix involves updating the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection. Ford is still developing a more permanent fix and will notify owners when the final remedy is available. In the meantime, owners can check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicle is affected.
